When it comes to your household, think of your dog and how the decisions you make will affect him. You may be ready for a new look or style of furniture in your living room, but you’re dog is used to certain things in specific places. Keep that in mind. If you must switch furniture sets or switch a room around, make sure you take the proper steps to get him used to the new furniture settings.

The first step you should take to do that is to put your pet’s leash on and walk him about the house. Name objects as you pass by them. Let him get a feel for the entire room.

If he wants to stop and sniff for a few seconds, let him. He is just trying to familiarize himself with the new room. It may not be new to you, but to him it is.

Be sure to block off any stairs that you have with a doggy gate. If you don’t have one, using a baby gate or guard will work just fine. As long as there is something in front of the stairs to block him from going down them and getting hurt, it will all be fine.

Be sure to put your pet’s food in the same spot every time. As he learns to get around his new home, he will be able to learn where the food is as well. If you have any rules that you would like to teach the pet, such as the do’s and don’t, make this clear from the first day you bring him home.
